As we reach the midpoint of the high school football season, it is time to reflect!
There. Enough of that.
Another week, another so-so effort here at the Journal for picking high school football games. Only 6-2 last week, failing badly in picks of Poteau to defeat Hilldale (42-16 loss) and Spiro to handle Idabel (23-6 defeat).
That leaves us 25-6 overall with two of the losses coming from Poteau and three, count them three, from Spiro.
Have we offended thee, Poteau and Spiro?
Probably not. But still…
Congratulations go out to the boys from Bokoshe, who won their first game last week over Eagle Point, as we correctly predicted! And no, that was not a homer pick. Remember, no homer picks here at the Journal. It is in our bylaws, that is, if we had bylaws.
Let’s move on, shall we? We shall.
POTEAU AT WEBSTER—We predict a crowd of 300 at this game, mostly Poteau fans, cheerleaders and band members. Unlike last year, when Poteau actually lost to Webster, if the Pirates can stay awake after the long bus ride, it should be a good week. Poteau has lost two straight. But those two losses were to excellent teams with great individual performances. The Pirates right that ship this week against a team which allowed 46 points to previously winless Fort Gibson last week. POTEAU 42, WEBSTER 14.
EUFAULA AT SPIRO—A tough pick. After three straight weeks of picking Spiro to win, only to come out with a loss, the easy assumption is to pick the Ironheads. Speaking of Ironheads, we like that nickname. Makes us wonder how it was selected. “Let’s call our team the Ironheads!” somebody once suggested and it was implemented. Spiro has been plagued by turnovers. Eufaula won its first game last week. SPIRO 17, EUFAULA 14.
HEAVENER AT VIAN—A tough week for the alma mater! Wolfies venture to Vian, which has racked up over 70 points in a pair of games already this year, including last week against Pocola. Hopefully, the Wolverines are in a slumber or it could get rather ugly. VIAN 49, HEAVENER 7.
PANAMA AT TALIHINA—Our first chance to see Talihina on Friday night. Tigers are perfect on the season at 4-0. So is Panama, but the numbers are flipped. We’ll go out on a limb and predict Talihina to win. But closer than one might think. TALIHINA 21, PANAMA 3.
POCOLA AT WILBURTON—Awful early to say this game has playoff implications, but…this one has big playoff implications. These should be two teams in the playoff mix and the winner takes a big step forward. Pocola won its first three games before running into Vian. Wilburton won its district opener against Panama. Indians need to get healthy fast as Diggerville isn’t the easiest place to play, or win. POCOLA 15, WILBURTON 14.
EAGLE POINT AT ARKOMA—Let’s see, Eagle Point lost to Bokoshe last week. Arkoma is perfect on the season. Another one in the “could get ugly’ category. ARKOMA 50, EAGLE POINT 14.
BOKOSHE AT CLAREMORE CHRISTIAN—After getting blown out its first three games, could Bokoshe win its second straight? It’s possible. The Warriors got blitzed 82-0 last week. Probably best to go with the home town boys. CLAREMORE CHRISTIAN 42, BOKOSHE 35.
