POTEAU–Another LeFlore County fast-pitch tournament and another championship for Poteau.
The Lady Pirates captured their fourth straight LCT trophywith a 4-1 win over Panama Thursday night in the championship game.
Poteau was once again too much for the tournament field, winning its first three tournament games, 33-0, before prevailing over a game Panama team which kept the game close throughout behind good pitching by Taylor Eaves.
But the Lady Pirates put together a pair of two-run innings and Poteau’s defense and the pitching of tournament MVP RaeLynn Caldwell put one more trophy in the PHS trophy case.
Caldwell struck out seven batters and never allowed Panama to threaten until the top of the sixth, when the Lady Razorbacks scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by Eaves.
Unlike the earlier games in the tournament, Poteau failed to jump out to a big lead early and did not score until the bottom of the third inning. Sidnee Ward led off with a single to right and scored as Shelby Standridge singled to left and the ball was misplayed. Gabba Wilson followed with a signle to knock in Standridge.
The Lady Pirates did not score again until the fifth. Standridge led off with a triple and Wilson smashed a double and later scored on a wild pitch for Poteau’s final run.
Panama had to rally to beat Spiro in the best game of the tournament. Trailing by two runs going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Razorbacks tallied three runs for the come-from-behind win.
