Most of the larger LeFlore County schools open district play tonight as Week 4 of the high school football season gets going.
The non-district schedule is over for Poteau and Spiro. The county’s Class 2A schools have one non-district game left or a bye while the eight-man schools have already started district play.
Several big games tonight, made even more important because they are also district contests.
A pair of undefeated teams hook up tonight in Pocola as the banged-up Indians host powerful Vian in the 2A-6 opener for both schools. Vian enters the contest ranked fifth in 2A while Pocola is banged up for tonight’s game.
Poteau will look to get back on the winning track after a disappointing 31-16 loss at home last week to Gravette when the Pirates host Hilldale in the district opener for both teams. Both teams are 2-1 on the season. The Pirates were impressive over the first two weeks of the season with a high-scoring offense, but came down to earth last week as they turned the ball over nine times in the loss.
The Pirates’ defense continued to improve and Poteau will have three starters back after missing the last two games.
Spiro will begin defense of its district title tonight as the Bulldogs visit Idabel in a matchup of a pair of 1-2 teams. Spiro easily won its opener over Panama before falling in a pair of close games to Muldrow and Roland. This will be the second visit by a LeFlore County team to Idabel this year as Poteau blasted the Warriors, 42-7, in week two.
After a blowout loss to Paris last week, Heavener looks to get off to a good start in district play when the Wolves host Hartshorne in another district opener for both teams. The Wolves are 1-2 on the season with the lone win coming at home two weeks ago against Central. Hartshorne is 2-1 and coming off a loss to Stigler last week.
Talihina will try to extend its long regular-season winning streak when it travels to visit Antlers tonight in a non-district game for both teams. Talihina is 3-0 overall while Antlers is 0-3 with blowout losses to Valliant, Savanna and Atoka.
Panama is another team looking for its first win of the season when the Razorbacks host district foe Wilburton tonight. The Razorbacks faced a tough opening schedule with losses to a pair of 3A schools in Spiro and Roland before losing to Gore last week on the road. Wilburton is 1-2 overall with a win over Savanna last week.
After a close win on the road last week, Arkoma returns home and hosts Bluejacket in a district contest. The Mustangs are 3-0 overall while Bluejacket enters the contest 1-1 after winning its first game last week. The Mustangs are ranked sixth in Class C in the latest OKRankings.com poll.
The final contest tonight pits a pair of teams looking for their first wins as Bokoshe hosts Eagle Point. Both squads are 0-3 on the season.
