POTEAU–Poteau moved one step closer to another LeFlore County Tournament championship with an 8-0 win over Spiro Wednesday in the winners bracket finals.
The Lady Pirates won their third straight game in the tournament and have still now allowed a run while outscoring opponents 33-0 in the three contests.
Poteau, ranked seventh in the latest Class 4A poll by OK Rankings.com, got another excellent pitching performance while the bats were scorching and the Lady Pirates’ defense was tough again, getting two assists from outfielders in the win over Spiro.
Sophomore RaeLynn Caldwell struck out five Spiro batters and allowed only two hits. She was assisted by a couple of gems from her defense as right fielder Meagan Ryburn threw out a Spiro hitter at first base to take away an apparent hit and Gabby Wilson hustled to run down a bad throw and throw another Lady Bulldog out at the plate to preserve the shutout.
Wilson had three hits for Poteau, including a double while Shelby Standridge, Alayna Holdworth and Caldwell each had a pair of hits. Caldwell had the biggest hit of the game, a triple in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded to break the game open. She actually scored on the play as Spiro got her in a rundown between third and home before she snuck in for the run when the ball was thrown away.
Poteau will face the winner of the earlier Panama and Spiro game at 7:30 p.m. tonight for the tournament championship.
Panama and Spiro play at 5:30 p.m. for the chance to play in the finals.
Panama won a pair of games Wednesday to stay alive. The Lady Razorbacks eliminated Howe in an early game, 11-1, before edging past Wister, 5-0.
Wister defeated Heavener, 8-6, in an early game Wednesday to advance and face Panama. Kylie Carpenter had the big hit for Wister with a three-run home run to deep center.
Heavener rallied twice, but Wister held off the Lady Wolves to win.
