Arkoma and Talihina appear well on their way to a postseason berth.
But for the other county schools, they are facing almost must-win games Friday night.
Arkoma and Talihina made it halfway through the season with perfect records, but both have key district games on the road tonight. The Mustangs visit perennial power Maud, which lost its first district game in several years last week to Bluejacket.
Talihina visits a Pocola team which desperately needs a win to make a run to the playoffs. The Tigers won their district opener last week over Panama, 45-10, and are 5-0 overall and ranked 10th in Class 2A.
This should be Talihina’s toughest game to date. Pocola won its first three games before losing its district opener to Vian and then falling, 14-13, on the road to Wilburton last week.
Poteau also faces a must-win game when the Pirates host district foe Stilwell. After starting 2-0, the Pirates have dropped three straight, including their first two district games to Hilldale and Webster.
Stilwell is 1-1 in district play following last week’s 26-20 win over Fort Gibson in overtime. Poteau must slow down the big plays by its opponents to get back in the playoff hunt with games the next two weeks against Sallisaw and Broken Bow, before closing with Fort Gibson and Muldrow.
Spiro snapped its own three-game losing streak with a win over Eufaula at home last week. The Bulldogs are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in district play. Hugo has struggled this season, winning only one game and is 0-2 in district play.
The district race is a mess as Seminole is the only team at 2-0 and Hugo the only one at 0-2 as the remaining district teams are all 1-1 in district play. The Bulldogs need this one badly with a home game against Seminole next week and games remaining against Valliant and Stigler.
Heavener is at home tonight against Wilburton and also must win to get back in the playoff hunt. The Wolves are 1-4 overall and 0-2 in district play after falling to district heavyweights Hartshorne and Vian. The Diggers are 2-0 in district play with wins over Panama and the narrow victory over Pocola.
Panama will be looking to snap its long losing streak tonight, but has a tough opponent tonight at home against Hartshorne. The Miners are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in district play with the lone loss coming to Stigler.
The final game for tonight has Bokoshe hosting Prue in another district game. The Tigers and Prue enter tonight’s game as both teams are looking for their first district win. Bokoshe does have one win on the season while Prue is looking for its first victory.
