I was disappointed in the first one. It did not seem very well organized and most members did not appear prepared.
We all knew there is a revenue shortage, but everyone came in wanting more money and there were not many specifics about what the money would be used for.
There was a lot of getting up and leaving the room and coming back with copies to distribute among the members. Another blogger wrote that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing in the County courthouse.
Commissioner Lance Smith is chairman of the board, but no one seemed to be in charge. I remembered an earlier column I wrote titled “They Work For Us” and thought “Who is supervising these people?”
The second meeting was somewhat better organized and they discussed which departments would have to take cuts, but I had to leave for another meeting before they adjourned.
They seem to have come to some conclusions because at the last meeting Treasurer Joe Wiles brought a copy showing the budgets for FY 09/10, 10/11, and 11/12. There was brief discussion and then a vote to approve the FY11/12 budget. Some got more than last year and some got less.
The budget for Charity, Excise Board and Election Board stayed the same as last year.
Youth Services and the Fair Board were defunded this year.
No one gets more unless someone else has to do with less. Hasn’t anyone figured that out? I do not think they print money at the Le Flore County Courthouse.
I have many more thoughts on this but I better keep them to myself until I learn more about how things work around here, and what I think needs to change and can be changed.
I would urge everyone to attend as many of these County Commissioner meetings every Monday morning at 9, city council meetings for Poteau on the first Monday evening at 7 at city hall, and school board meetings as they can. Get involved in your government instead of just letting them do whatever they want to do.
And VOTE when there is elections for these offices.
