Football can be strange at times.
That is certainly true when it comes to the district races for our county teams. Just think, prior to the season or just a couple of weeks ago, nobody would have thought the winner of Friday’s game between Heavener and Panama could be the final playoff participant in 2A-6.
But that could be what happens. In the last two weeks, Heavener won at Talihina and Panama snapped a 17-game losing streak to win at Pocola.
That sets up Friday’s matchup as a game which will determine that playoff spot. This is the final district game for the Razorbacks while Heavener could win this week, but would need a win in the final against Pocola.
Heavener, Panama, Pocola and Talihina each have one win in district play. Heavener and Pocola have wins over Talihina, which defeated Panama. But Talihina would have to defeat either Hartshorne or Vian to get back in the playoff race.
Pocola plays a non-district game this week while Panama completes district play with Heavener.
But this is far from the only district race which is a mess.
Poteau made a big move toward making the playoffs by defeating Broken Bow, 33-25, for the Pirates’ first win over the Savages since 2006.
The Pirates (2-3)still have to win their final two games at Fort Gibson(2-3)this week and at Muldrow (0-5)in week 10. Sallisaw (5-0)downed Hilldale (4-1)Friday and appears to be in control for the district championship, but must play at Broken Bow Friday.
Hilldale, which is without standout quarterback Dalton Cunningham, plays at Webster (3-2). Webster finishes with the top two teams in district play with games against Hilldale and at Sallisaw.
In 3A, Spiro is now in danger of missing the playoffs after losing at Valliant Friday. The Bulldogs are 2-3 in the district with a home game against Atoka (1-4) and at Stigler (4-1) the following week.
Seminole is atop the district race. Stigler is second while Eufaula and Valliant are both 3-2 and Idabel is 2-3, with a win over Spiro. Eufaula is at Idabel this week while Valliant is at Stigler.
Finally, in C-4, Webbers Falls’ win over Arkoma pretty much cleared up the top two spots in the district with the Warriors in the top spot and the Mustangs in second. Midway and Maud appear to have the final two playoff spots in hand.
Webbers Falls closes with games against Midway and Maud and would have to lose both games and Arkoma would have to defeat Bokoshe and Claremore Christian to win the district.
