A mid-season meltdown at the Journal picks last week.
After soaring through the first five weeks of the season, our picks resembled the stock market last week. A drastic drop that left our investors, not that we actually have any, shaking their heads, disappointed in the performance.
Fortunately, we are in for the long haul and won’t allow the hiccup (well, burp might be a better description) of last week to send us spiraling into a deep depression.
We were a rather pedestrian 4-3 last week. And we had the worst pick in the three years we have been rolling out picks each week. Maud 42, Arkoma 35?
One of our readers wanted to bet a steak dinner on the outcome of that game. Good thing we didn’t take that wager.
Final score: Arkoma 62, Maud 14. We studied old Bill Clinton press conferences on how to spin that as a positive, but some things are simply impossible.
Also lost in the brilliant Heavener to beat Wilburton pick, and fell short on the Talihina to beat Pocola choice, but that one was a toss up.
Overall, 34-11. If we were in Vegas, that’s still good. But…
On to the picks.
POTEAU AT SALLISAW—Playing this one on Thursday for some reason only the Diamonds can explain, since it was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, which would not force many of us who have jobs to go to work the day following the game. Sallisaw is 4-0 against Oklahoma competition this year and shares the district lead with Hilldale, but has benefitted from playing the teams at the bottom of the district and barely beat Fort Gibson last week. This one depends on which Poteau team shows up. SALLISAW 24, POTEAU 21.
SEMINOLE AT SPIRO—Seminole was the only team to defeat Spiro in district play last year. Now, the Chieftains are undefeated entering this game against a Spiro squad which has won two straight. A Spiro win would put the Bulldogs in good shape for the playoffs. Afraid the visitors from out west are a little too good. SEMINOLE 28, SPIRO 21.
HEAVENER AT TALIHINA—It’s never been a good time to play Talihina over the last few years. For Heavener, the timing couldn’t be worse. The Tigers lost for the first time in the regular season since 2007 last week. Heavener still struggling. TALIHINA 28, HEAVENER 14.
POCOLA AT HARTSHORNE—The biggest game in 2A-6 this week. Hartshorne undefeated in district play while the Indians are 1-2, but coming off a win over Talihina last week. This one will go a long way toward deciding the final outcome of the district. Pocola is good, but so is Hartshorne. HARTSHORNE 35, POCOLA 28.
PANAMA AT VIAN—This would be a good week for Panama to call in sick. That won’t happen, of course, but at least Panama’s girls won the state championship in softball! Panama has yet to win a game while Vian is undefeated and coming off a win over Lincoln Christian. Let’s hope Vian is feeling merciful this week. VIAN 50, PANAMA 7.
MIDWAY AT ARKOMA—Okay, we apologize again for picking Arkoma to lose a game the Mustangs went on to win, 62-14. Won’t happen again. Mustangs have a big one again this week, as Midway is also undefeated in district play. We’re going with the county boys this week, and not just as a make-up pick, mind you. ARKOMA 42, MIDWAY 28.
