My mom would always make us dump the bags in the floor and inspect the candy regardless. There were always horror stories about things being put into apples or homemade goodies. Mrs. Mays, who lived on our circle drive, made homemade goodies and we would get to eat those!
Now, many parents and churches provide events to take the place of door to door knocking.
I always look forward to opening the door to see the kids I know dressed up. Some of my favorites in years past besides our own little goblins have been Dusty Peters, Kara and Lindsey Taylor, Tara Kellogg, Deana and Jeana Adams to name a few. The really funny ones are the little ones that just don’t care at all. Then there are the ones that want to reach in your bowl and grab more.
Some of the homemade costumes are truly the best! I am always trying to come up with something funny and unusual. I know I have tried for years to get one of my friends at the bank to dress up in something I come up with. This person just never does go for it!
You know the themes like the “serial killer” are great. You place a box of cereal on a string around your neck and place a knife in it, “cereal killer”. I especially get a kick out of the ones where one person is in a costume but there is an illusion they are riding something. Or some of these crazy illusion ones that look like someone is on their back. As you can tell I just love funny things. I also enjoy the witches that look they smacked into a pole.
It has been a few years ago since I attended the Trail of Treats and Thrills at Wister Lake State Park. I have accompanied my nieces and nephews in the past. There are spots lined up to get treats from one end of Quarry Island to the next. The adults handing out most of the treats are dressed up.
This year there is a KPRV costume contest for the little goblins at the end of the trail at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place on Oct. 29h from 6 to 9 p.m. Parking is below the dam at Lake Wister and buses bring you to the island for the goodies and drinks. So if you are looking for a safe place to take your kids trick or treating you cannot beat Lake Wister State Park.
This Saturday is also the Boo Run at Wister where you can also dress up!
So start thinking of those scary or hopefully funny costumes for this year.
Until next week…
