OKLAHOMA CITY–Panama entered the state tournament not ranked as one of the top 20 teams in Class 2A.
The Lady Razorbacks finished the tournament as the top team in the class.
Behind the strong pitching of Taylor Eaves and stout defense, Panama captured the school’s first state championship on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Oktaha in the finals of the Class 2A fast pitch state tournament.
Hannah Goines’ RBI single in the fourth scored Stephanie Barccheers and was the only run the Lady Razorbacks needed.
Eaves gave up only three hits and struck out seven batters as Panama avenged a 1-0 loss to Oktaha earlier in the year when the Lady Razorbacks were missing several starters.
Panama finished 31-10 overall and knocked off top-ranked Colbert, 3-2, in the first round of the state tournament, edged No. 10 Savanna, 1-0, in the semifinals and captured the title with the win over sixth-ranked Oktaha in the finals.
The Lady Razorbacks trailed Colbert, 2-0, going into their final at-bat in the first round, only to score two runs and send the game into extra innings. Panama scored in the 11th inning to pull out the win.
