Just a couple of weeks ago, Heavener and Panama appeared to be getting ready for basketball.
That was before Heavener won at Talihina two weeks ago and Panama defeated Pocola last week. Now, two teams which have combined to win three games this year will play with the winner having a good shot at making the playoffs.
Vian, Wilburton and Hartshorne are in the playoffs in 2A-6. The fourth team is TBD. Heavener, Panama, Pocola and Talihina are all tied for the fourth playoff spot with one win in district play.
Talihina has defeated Panama, but lost to Pocola. Panama beat Pocola. Heavener won over Talihina.
Panama’s last district game is tonight. If the Razorbacks win, they will have two district wins and will have the tiebreaker edge against either Heavener or Pocola.
The Wolves could win tonight, but still must beat Pocola next week, otherwise those two teams will have two district wins and the Indians will make the playoffs.
Talihina has the roughest closing stretch with games tonight at home against Hartshorne, probably the second best team in the district and next week at powerful Vian. The Tigers have to win one of those two games to have any hope of making the playoffs and have Panama beat Heavener.
In other words, the final playoff spot is a mess.
Poteau is still in a must-win situation. The Pirates captured the first game of a three-game stretch last week by defeating Broken Bow for the first time since 2006. Now, Poteau travels to take on a dangerous Fort Gibson team tonight.
Both teams are 2-3 in district play and the winner is still alive for a playoff berth. Fort Gibson is tough at home, almost winning earlier over Hilldale and Sallisaw.
The Pirates must win tonight and again on the road next week at Muldrow.
Spiro is also in a do-or-die game. The Bulldogs host Atoka tonight and visits Stigler next week. They are currently tied with Idabel in fifth place in the district.
The final county game for tonight features two county rivals as Bokoshe visits Arkoma. Bokoshe could salvage a disappointing season with an upset at Arkoma, which lost its first game last week at Webbers Falls.
Arkoma could still win the district, but needs Webbers Falls to lose its final games against Maud and Midway.
