POTEAU–LeFlore County Health Department would like to remind everyone that now is the time to vaccinate against influenza. With cooler weather on the way, immunizing against influenza is the best way to protect yourself and your family from serious complications associated with the flu virus.
Good health habits such as avoiding close contact with persons that are sick, staying away from persons when you are sick, covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, and most important, wash your hands frequently. Have children to wash their hands when returning from school.
Persons who are at high risk from serious illness or death due to complications of flu should always be vaccinated. High risk means persons with long-term health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. Pregnant women and children should always be vaccinated against influenza.
On Oct. 31, LeFlore County Health Department will be hosting a “Say Boo to the Flu” children’s event. Health department staff will be dressed in costumes portraying story book characters such as Snow White, Woody & Jessie (Toy Story) and Tinkerbell just to name a few.
Halloween gift bags will be given away free to children coming in for flu shots. The gift bags will contain stickers, toys, toothbrushes and healthy snacks. Ocean Dental from Fort Smith will be donating toothpaste and floss for the bags.
Protect your little “trick or treater” this flu season by getting him/her vaccinated, receive a treat bag and see the characters of their story books. For more information contact LeFlore County Health Department at 918-647-8601.
