CAMERON—Rodie Snell stepped up at a big time for Cameron and Ryan Carter put the finishing touches on Howe as the Yellow Jackets rallied in the second half for a 61-57 win here Tuesday night.
In the earlier game, it was all Howe as the Lady Lions jumped out to a huge lead early and cruised to a 78-17 win.
But it was the late game which was the main attraction as Cameron opened its home schedule.
Howe built a nine-point lead in the third quarter, only to see Cameron fight back with its two big guys, Kenny Whitehead and Austin Standridge, on the bench with foul trouble.
Cameron took the lead on a three-point basket by Justin Cox to start the fourth quarter, only to see Howe regain the lead. Carter made a three-point basket and Dylan Poor hit a pair of free throws to give the Jackets a four-point lead.
The Jackets held the lead, but could not put Howe away. Both teams lost their big guys in the fourth quarter as Standridge and Whitehead fouled out for Cameron while Danny Barnhart, who scored 14 in the first half, was sent to the bench with his fifth foul.
Howe tied the score at 51 on a basket by Jared Brown with 2:14 left. Snell then made a three, his only basket of the game to give Cameron the lead for good.
Brent Hill answered for Howe before Carter took over for Cameron. He hit a layup for the three-point cushion, made one of two free throws and then hit both free throws with 27 seconds left to give Cameron a 59-53 lead. Hill scored another basket for Howe to cut the margin to four before Poor hit one of two free throws. Nathan Hill added a basket for the Lions with three seconds left to pull Howe within 60-57, but Carter was fouled and made one free throw for the final margin with less than a second remaining.
Carter, who scored 30 points in Cameron’s win over McCurtain in the season-opener on Friday, had 21 to lead the Jackets in scoring. Cox added 11 and Whitehead had 10.
Brown and Barnhart paced Howe with 17 points as the much-improved Lions drop to 1-1.
In the first game, Howe quickly jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter before sending in the subs. The Lady Lions eventually led 31-7 at the end of the first quarter and continued to increase the margin throughout the game, even though the reserves played a majority of the game.
Courtney Brown had 12 points and Chasity Sanders added 11 to lead Howe, which had 14 players score in the game. The Lady Lions are now 2-0.
Kacey McGee led Cameron, now 0-2, with six points while Cindy Hicks had five.
Howe hosts Wister Friday while Cameron travels to Wister on Tuesday.
