Another week, another close but no cigar effort.
Since we don’t smoke the cigars, that is okay. We were 6-1 last week, losing the Poteau game again and stand 49-17 on the season.
Just so you know, five of the losses on the season were by the Pirates. And no, they were not homer picks.
As you probably know, only two county teams made the playoffs in what was a down year for county teams. No Poteau, Spiro or even Talihina, which ended a three-year playoff run.
Heavener and Arkoma are in. Two years ago, those two teams combined for three wins.
Now, they are the pride of the county. Congratulations Wolves and Mustangs. And on to our playoff picks!
HEAVENER AT STROUD—Ouch. Heavener’s reward for making the playoffs is a road trip to undefeated Stroud, which is ranked fourth in the state and one spot ahead of Vian. The Tigers have allowed only 48 points all year and the closest margin of victory was 20 points. But at least the Wolves made the playoffs. STROUD 49, HEAVENER 14.
COVINGTON-DOUGLAS AT ARKOMA—Arkoma is 9-1 and finished second behind Webbers Falls in C-4. Covington-Douglas is 8-2 and ranked sixth in the state. All four teams in the Wildcats’ district is ranked in the top 10 with the top two teams ranked first and third. The only common opponent is Webbers Falls. Covington Douglas won in week 2, 40-14. Webbers Falls beat Arkoma, 84-38. A win would be one of the biggest in school history for Arkoma. But…COVINGTON-DOUGLAS 42, ARKOMA 28.
