Just when it appeared like defending Panel champion Mark Caldwell’s reign was over, he rose from the depths of last place with a week that will likely not be remembered for years to come.
With his back to the wall and odds against him, along with all the other sports cliché which will be skipped for brevity, Caldwell came roaring back like most champions before him (with the exception of the San Francisco Giants) and was simply perfect.
Caldwell was 10-0 in the week 9 Panel Picks to zoom from behind and tie previous leader Doug Hall, who was 7-3. Jerry Pitchford was 8-2 and also moved into a tie for first place as our manly Panel heads into the final week of the regular season for county teams.
All three are now 68-22 on the season. You could cut the tension with a knife, if that was physically possible.
“I knew it was just a matter of time before it was Mark Caldwell time,” he didn’t say. “I’ve been here before. This isn’t a short dash, it’s a marathon. When the going gets tough, Mark Caldwell gets going.”
Our Panel will continue picking games as long as a county team is in the playoffs, so each week after the regular season ends is almost like sudden death. Almost.
