Heavener and Pocola aren’t likely to share many holiday greetings with each other.
Last year when the game didn’t mean anything, Pocola and Heavener had a donnybrook that almost escalated into a huge fight at the end of the game.
Tonight, when the two county foes meet at Heavener, it is for all the marbles.
The winner advances to the playoffs and a first-round game at Stroud. The loser is through for the season.
Heavener enters tonight’s contest in fourth place with district wins over Talihina and Panama. Pocola defeated Talihina also, but fell to Panama at home two weeks ago.
The Wolves hope to control the ball and use the running of Blake Smittle and quarterback Tyler Hamm while Pocola spreads the field and wants to use its speed and quickness to make big plays.
The other big game in the county tonight is Spiro visiting Stigler. Stigler has already clinched second place in the district while Spiro needs to win and get some help to return to the playoffs.
Spiro is in a four-way tie with Eufaula, Idabel and Valliant for fourth place in the district. The Bulldogs defeated Eufaula, but lost to Idabel and Valliant. Eufaula is playing district champion Seminole while Idabel and Valliant play the two worst teams in the district on the road in Hugo and Atoka.
Arkoma is the only county team which has clinched a playoff spot. The Mustangs will be at home in the first-round of the playoffs as they are the second-place team in the district behind Webbers Falls. Arkoma closes out the regular season with a game at district foe Claremore Christian.
All the other county teams are playing for pride and wanting to go out as winners.
Poteau travels to Muldrow and former assistant Rob Johnson tonight. Johnson is in his first year as head coach at Muldrow, which is 2-7 overall and 1-5 in district play.
The Pirates hope to finish at .500 with a win. Poteau is 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the district.
Panama has a non-district game at NOAH to wrap up its season. The Razorbacks are 1-8 and finished district play with a 1-5 mark.
Talihina has a tough contest in its finale tonight as the Tigers travel to undefeated and fourth-ranked Vian. When the two teams met last year, Talihina won the game to win the district.
Vian has already clinched the district championship and will be looking for some payback on the young Tigers.
Bokoshe wraps up a struggling season with a home game against Maud tonight. Maud is tied for fourth in its district with Bluejacket.
