Christmas is not just a time of receiving, but a time of giving as well. Christmas may be even a time to reflect back and be thankful, but most of all Christmas is about the birth of Christ coming to the world, to save it, not condemn it.
The Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County is by no means a comparison to Christ but, we do want to be parents’ answer to prayers. The BGCLC along with a partnership with the Twenty First Century After-School Grant Program provides that help for working families. Not only do we keep kids safe, but we inspire learning in communities like Arkoma, Shady Point, Heavener and Poteau.
But the economic downturn has put a squeeze on after-school programs not just across the state, but nationwide. Some of these programs have had to scale back their services or even close their doors.
Yet the reality is that many parents depend on after- school programs to not only provide a high quality hands-on learning experience, nutritious snacks, and opportunities to explore the sciences, arts
and physical fitness, they also want after-school programs to provide a safe place for kids to be while they are at work.
So as you remember the excitement of the Christmas season, remember us and our efforts to provide for the needs of families across the county. Reflecting back, was there a time when you needed someone to help? Was there a time when you worried about what your children were doing after-school?
That is why the BGCLC would like to invite you to participate in our end of the year giving campaign. This gives families and businesses in the community the opportunity to help make a “Great Future” for kids in the county. But, if you are the type that needs something tangible in return, than you might might want to give by attending our biggest fund raising campaign. “Affair of the Heart” Dinner, Dancing and Silent Auction is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2012 at the Reynolds Center in Poteau.
Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased at the BGCLC office located at 205 Dewey Avenue in Poteau, the Community State Bank, Poteau, First National Bank, Heavener BGCLC Board members and staff or any of our school sites.
It is because of a community that cares that we can continue to provide quality programs for kids, and provide peace of mind for parents that their child is going to be safe.
We are looking forward to receiving contributions through our mail out campaign as well as selling tickets to our Valentine Event. Your giving is the key to keeping the doors open at the BGCLC and expanding participation in the after-school by increasing the number of students we can serve. Your giving can allow us to stay open all day for our summer learning programs and offering fun-filled learning activities and increasing more options for kids like drama and music.
So as we look forward to 2012, we also look forward to community involvement and peace of mind for parents. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
