We had a pretty good shakeup in the Journal rankings and the Readers’ Poll after a busy week of basketball for the county schools in the last week of play before the Christmas break.
It was a case of what have you done for me lately as it gets tougher to rank the schools as more teams have now played each other.
For the boys, the rankings look much different. Poteau defeated previously top-ranked Spiro last week and moved into the top spot, even though the Pirates closed the week with losses on the road to Stilwell and McAlester.
Spiro drops to second while Howe moves to third after finishing third in the Wilburton tournament, the Lions’ second straight third-place finish. Pocola beat former third-ranked Heavener, 66-40, on Friday and moves up to fourth from eighth while Heavener drops to fifth.
Heavener did defeat Wister at home on Thursday to stay above the Wildcats.
For the girls, Howe captured the Wilburton tournament championship to retake the top spot after Talihina lost its first game at Stigler on Friday. Spiro is at third while Heavener moves into the fourth spot, followed by Arkoma, which moved up to fifth from 10th after a big win at Bokoshe last week.
Bokoshe drops from fourth to sixth.
In the Readers’ Poll, our voters also have Poteau’s boys and Howe girls as the top team with Spiro second in each poll.
Each Monday, the Journal publishes its rankings along with the Readers’ Poll. All coaches, players and fans are invited to vote for the county teams. Your vote needs to be returned by Sunday at 6 p.m. by email to [email protected] or by fax to (866) 670-8784.
Here is a form you can use to vote on the county basketball teams.
