SPIRO—The expected battle between two of the better boys teams in eastern Oklahoma turned into a blowout and Roland held off Spiro at the end here Friday night.
The undefeated Roland boys were in complete control in downing Spiro, 77-49, while Summer Teehee was too much down the stretch as the Lady Rangers held on late for a 63-58 win.
On a night when Spiro’s boys struggled to score, the Bulldogs missed their first eight shots and made only 19 percent in the first half as Roland jumped ahead by double figures early and dominated play.
Roland led by 14 points at the end of the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 28 at halftime. The Rangers’ excellent guard, Seth Youngblood, outscored Spiro in the first half by himself, garnering 21 points while the Bulldogs could only tally 20.
The deep Rangers rotated players in at every stop, without any letup. Spiro’s own explosive shooter, Knifeis Carter drew a crowd whenever he got the ball and was held to only two points on the night.
Tyh Hawkins was the only Spiro player to have a good night, scoring 18 points with most of his scoring coming in the second half.
Youngblood only added two points in the second half to finish with 23. Kaleb Parman added 12 points for the Rangers, who had 11 players score, while Corey Meadors had 10.
The first game of the night was much better. After Spiro went ahead early in the fourth quarter, Teehee took over, scoring 11 straight points for Roland to keep her team ahead.
Spiro stayed close and after a basket by Thecha Hawkins with 1:33 left, the Lady Bulldogs only trailed by a point.
The Lady Bulldogs got a steal with just under a minute left, but threw the ball away. Marissa Enochs sealed the win by going 4-4 on free throws as Roland pulled away and Spiro could not answer.
Teehee finished with 29 points to lead Roland while Tia Smith had 13 and Whitley Vann had 10. Philicea Mack paced Spiro with 17, Meocha McKesson had 13 and Sarika Willis 12.
