We had the great honor and privilege of having State Representative James Lockhart and his son Jacob tour the Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County Poteau site. Jacob, got to participate in a “Cooking Club” project.
Audrey Fassio, Site Coordinator assisted Jacob in making Pilgrims Hats from Oreo cookies. The “Cooking Club” is a funded offered through the Twenty First Century Grant Program.
Lockhart, who wants to set a good example to all businesses and individuals is going to lead by his example and participate in out YES Mentoring Program at the Heavener site.
YES Mentoring is a school based mentoring program serving fourth through eighth grade students. All mentoring sessions are held during regular Boys and Girls Club hours at both Poteau and Heavener locations.
A mentor is a special volunteer who is committed to giving the time and energy to serve as a positive guide and role model to students. Mentors care about the youth of today and quality education.
Lockhart would like to challenge all employers in LeFlore County to allow their employees to spend 30 minutes a week to mentor a child in the after-school program and to lead by example to mentor a child themselves.
The BGCLC is offered at Poteau, Heavener, Arkoma and Shady Point Schools through a partnership and funded by the Twenty First Century Grant Program and other grants.
To find out more about the BGCLC or to volunteer with our YES Mentoring Program contact the office at (918) 647-7136.
