The Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County, in partnership with 21st Century After-School Grant program, has some wonderful volunteer opportunities for adults in LeFlore County.
We need adults who want to make a difference and willing to volunteer their time at either our Poteau or Heavener sites and mentor a child.
It doesn’t take that much time. All we ask is that you dedicate at least 30 minutes a week to helping a child cope with the struggles and the successes of life.
Youth Experiencing Success (YES) is a school based mentoring program serving fourth through eighth grade students. All mentoring sessions are held from 3:30 until 5 p.m. at the Poteau Primary School, Pansy Kidd Middle School and Heavener Schools.
So who is a mentor?
*Mentors are special volunteers who are committed to giving the time and energy to serve as a positive guide and role model to students.
*Mentors care about the youth of today and quality education.
*Mentors can steer our youth through challenging times and support their journey into adulthood.
*Mentors are very important individuals who can unlock the potential of a child and nurture their talent.
*Mentors help improve a young person’s self-esteem.
*Mentors teach young people how to relate well to all kinds of people and help them strengthen communication skills.
Studies from Big Brothers Big Sisters show that youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 46 percent less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs and 27 percent less likely to start drinking.
We need adults to say YES.
Also we would like to invite you to join us for our “Affair of the Heart” with dinner, dancing, and live auction on Feb. 11, 2012 at the Reynolds Community Center in Poteau starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at The Poteau Chamber of Commerce, First National Heavener and at our office at 205 Dewey Avenue, in Poteau. A big thanks goes out to AES of Shady Point for sponsoring the facility. All the proceeds go to help support programs for the kids who attend our after-school programs.
The BGCLC is a Non Profit Organization which is funded through a partnership with Poteau, Heavener, Shady Point and Arkoma Schools through a 21 Century Grant as well as other grants and through the support of the community.
