POTEAU—A large group of visitors are expected to visit Poteau on Friday and Saturday as Poteau High School is hosting the Maverick Conference Tournament.
The two-day wrestling tournament is held on a rotational basis each year. The tournament features 20 teams from eastern Oklahoma and will be held at the Mick Thompson Fieldhouse at Carl Albert State College.
Matches start at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
An estimated 200-250 wrestlers and 500-600 fans are expected to attend.
A portion of the wrestlers and fans are expected to stay in Poteau on Friday night so local restaurants should expect increased activity on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Poteau Takedown Club could use some help in putting on the tournament. Members are asking for donations of 20 cases of water, 20 cases of soft drinks and 20 cases of Gatorade.
The club will host a concession stand for the tournament. Funds raised from the tournament will allow the wrestling team to acquire equipment, cover team travel expenses and tournament entry fees.
