CAMERON—The third quarter wasn’t much to write home about for the Pocola boys here Thursday night.
But the Indians more than made up for it in the final period to take a 50-47 win over Cameron and sweep the season series from the Yellow Jackets. The win capped a sweep of the two contests as Pocola girls earlier downed Cameron, 38-26.
After blowing a six-point halftime lead and getting outscored 14-2 in the third quarter, Pocola came alive in the fourth quarter to outlast the hosts in a back-and-forth contest that was not decided until the final minute.
Pocola scored six straight points over the latter part of the fourth quarter to break a 43-43 tie. Kyle Highley gave Pocola the lead for good with 3:41 left on a basket. Tyler Hutchins increased the margin with a pair of free throws and his basket with 1:32 left put the Indians ahead, 49-43.
Dylan Poor scored a basket with 42 seconds left to cut the lead to four points before Tanner Francis hit one of two free throws with 16 seconds left for a 50-45 lead.
Austin Standridge answered for Cameron with 2.3 seconds left, but it was too late for the Jackets.
Trailing 38-32 going into the final quarter, Pocola got hot. Highley and Grant Severe each hit a three to tie the score and Dakota Highley gave Pocola a 40-38 lead. Poor hit a free throw to cut the lead to one but Kyle Highley nailed another three for a four-point lead.
Cameron quickly responded as Justin Cox scored on a layup and Ryan Carter hit both free throws to tie the game for the last time.
The Jackets earlier trailed by six at halftime after a pair of late three-point shots in the second quarter. Cameron rallied by scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter to build a four-point lead after Carter’s three.
Preston Hobbs scored Pocola’s only points of the quarter before Poor and Kenny Whitehead added a pair of scores to give the Jackets the lead going into the final quarter.
Francis and Hobbs each scored 12 points to lead Pocola, now 9-2. Poor had 12 for Cameron while Carter added 11.
Pocola’s girls grabbed the lead early in the first game and never let Cameron back into the contest.
The Lady Indians led by seven at the end of the first quarter and stretched the margin to 12 points at halftime.
Breanna Vaughn paced Pocola with 11 points while Shayla Thompson added 10. Kaycee McGee lead Cameron, still looking for its first win, with 10 points while Tasha Janway added eight.
Cameron is at Howe Friday night while Pocola hosts Hartshorne.
