TAKE ON TOPICS
Mark Pollard graduated from Idabel High School in 1975. At that time he came to Carl Albert Junior College and then on to Southeastern College in Durant.
When he graduated from SEOSU, Bill SanMillen hired him as an assistant coach at Carl Albert Junior College. This was the same year, 1979, that he married his sweetheart Cindy. Cindy also comes from a famous baseball lineage, her uncle was Mickey Mantle.
It is a rare thing for a coach to stay in one place for 33 years. After three years as assistant coach he became the head coach at Carl Albert Junior College. He has coached seven players that have gone on to play professional baseball.
All three sons played baseball at Carl Albert State College, Matt, Brooks, and Taylor. He has been to the World Series with the Carl Albert baseball team five times. This last Saturday Carl Albert State College coach Mark Pollard won not only his 900th, but his 901 career win.
I remember the first time I met him. He was the instructor for one of those HYPER First Aid Classes that you take as a freshman. I know he is a tough coach but he was very personable as an instructor. I really enjoyed his class.
I don’t know anyone that doesn’t love him. Of course his son’s joke that he has to have the most wins and losses at Carl Albert State College since he has been at the college for so long. They are sure he has the most ejections. Coach Pollard makes baseball exciting and we are lucky to have had him in Poteau for so many years.
His entire family attended the ballgames on Saturday, his wife Cindy Pollard, and their three sons, Matt, Brooks and Taylor, daughter-in-law Jeana and the three granddaughters Paley, Paven and Pacie.
His mom Juanita Pollard, and his sister Jan and brother in law Joe Coffman traveled from Idabel. Christian Coffman also attended from Idabel, he is Mark’s great nephew. His mother-in-law Barbara Mantle Shuck attended from Del City. Donna and Jerry Johnson the other proud grandparents were also in attendance.
The home run ball hit over the fence on the 900th game was retrieved by Coach Pollard’s family Paley, Paven and Christian. The ball was marked “Coach Pollard” and “CASC 900th” by Jeana Pollard. Paven Pollard was proud to present the winning ball to “Big Poppy”.
It was truly a special day for the Carl Albert State College baseball team, Carl Albert State College, and Mark Pollard.
Congratulations to Coach Mark Pollard and keep the wins coming!
Until next week…
