Six county basketball teams will try to continue their seasons for at least another day as area play opens Thursday.
All six teams are in the losers’ brackets of area tournaments. With a win, they play again Friday while a loss ends their year.
The biggest surprise of the postseason has been Poteau’s girls. The Lady Pirates struggled most of the season before getting on a roll late in the year with wins at Spiro and Heavener, before winning their district over Hilldale. Poteau bounced back from a loss at Roland to the Lady Rangers in the regional tournament to win twice, including the consolation championship game against conference opponent Stilwell, which had defeated Poteau twice in the regular season.
Next up for the Lady Pirates is a game Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against 13th-ranked Jay at Muskogee. Jay defeated Muldrow in the regionals and almost knocked defending state champion Fort Gibson off on its home court before losing. Here is the bracket for Area IV brackets.
Both Spiro teams are in the Class 3A area tournament at Fort Gibson. After falling in the regional finals to Salina, the Lady Bulldogs play Wilburton Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Spiro’s boys bounced back from a loss to Keys in the opening game of the regional tournament to defeat Antlers and Valliant to win the consolation championship. Here is the Class 3A Area IV girls bracket.
Spiro’s boys take on Coalgate at 3 p.m. Thursday, also at Fort Gibson. The 3A Area IV boys bracket can be seen here.
Three county teams are still alive in the 2A area tournament at Wilburton.
The Howe and Talihina girls lost in regional finals to undefeated teams in Amber-Pocasset and Oktaha. Wister’s boys reached the regional finals before losing to Haworth for the second time this year.
Talihina will try to defeat Rattan for the second time this season when the two teams meet at 1:30 p.m. Howe’s girls face Central Sallisaw at 6:30 p.m. If both county teams win Thursday, there will be a rematch of the LeFlore County Tournament finals, won by Howe. Here is the 2A Area IV girls bracket.
Wister’s boys play Porter at 8 p.m. Thursday, immediately after the Howe and Central contest. The 2A Area IV boys bracket can be seen here.
