POTEAU–Carl Albert State College Coach Mark Pollard got his 900th career win Saturday as the Vikings defeated the Spartans of Southwest Community College, 7-3 in the first game of a twinbill at Tyman Park.
It took a monster two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the win. The Vikings scored six runs with two outs and nobody on to finish the scrappy Spartans off.
Down 3-1, Carl Albert got things going and sent 10 batters to the plate with two outs, the big shot was a two-run home run by Brooks Dethrage to end the scoring.
The Spartan team took the lead in the third inning 3-1 as the Viking defense made a pair of errors to allow two runs to cross the plate. A large crowd was in attendance anticipating the 900th win and was subdued by the pitching and defense of the Iowa Community College.
All was forgiven as they rallied for the win. Pollard’s achievement was announced by assistant coach Ryan Bowen, who also played for his mentor.
Pollard is in his 32nd year as the skipper of the ball club. His family was in attendance and he received a standing ovation as he posed with his team for a photo. Many former players, Trojans and Vikings, were in attendance for the milestone.
