All high school football games are important, of course, or they would not be played.
But the importance of each game will be intensified on Friday as most of the LeFlore County football teams begin district play.
The eight-man teams have already started district play while Pocola has another week to wait. All the others get district play started on Friday night.
It will be a Red Out at Poteau when the Pirates host Muldrow in the district opener for both teams. The Poteau Quarterback Club is encouraging all the fans to wear red to show support for the Pirates.
Poteau is 1-2 overall after downing Haysville Campus, Kan., 66-26, last week. Muldrow is also 1-2 with a 22-12 win over Heavener last week. This will be the district opener for both teams.
Heavener finally gets a home game as the Wolves host Eufaula Friday as the school celebrates homecoming. The Wolves are 1-2 with an opening win over Atoka before losses at Vian and Muldrow. Eufaula enters with a 2-1 win following impressive wins the last two weeks over Hartshorne and county rival Checotah.
The biggest game of the week is at Spiro with the Bulldogs hosting Roland in a battle of undefeated teams. Both teams have wins over Muldrow and the contest should go a long ways toward determining the district champion.
Savanna has been Talihina’s biggest competition in the district the last two years. Those two teams hook it up at Talihina, which will be a big game to determine the district standings. The Golden Tigers are ranked second in Class A and are undefeated after last week’s big win at Christian Heritage, ranked 8th in 2A at the time.
Panama will make the long trip to Antlers in another district opener. The Razorbacks are 2-1 and picked up some big momentum last week by coming back from a 28-6 deficit to win at Warner in overtime.
Pocola is looking for its first win when the Indians host Warner in a non-district game. Pocola has lost to Central, Poteau’s JV and Quinton to open the season.
Arkoma visits Weleetka as the Mustangs go for their first district win. Both teams are 1-2.
