Three LeFlore County football teams will get an early start on the 2014 football season with games on Thursday night.
Poteau takes on Alma in the Hootens.com Kickoff Week game at Mayo-Thompson Stadium in Fort Smith, Panama hosts Gore and Talihina visits old rival Wilburton in games on Thursday.
Fresh off a trip to the state finals, Poteau opens with a traditionally tough foe in Alma. The Airedales made it to the state semifinals last year. The two schools regularly played for a number of years before the rivalry ended in the early 2000s.
Poteau’s defense is expected to be the strength of the team, especially up front. The Pirates are breaking in a new quarterback on offense in Ben Klutts, along with some new names on the line. But Poteau does return Roger Barcheers at tailback and a skilled set of wide receivers.
The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., but the Charleston and Shiloh Christian game starts at 5:30 p.m. so it could be later.
Panama hosts Gore once again as the two teams kick off the season. The Razorbacks got the upper hand last season and will be shooting for their third straight playoff trip.
Talihina has most of its players back after reaching the semifinals last year and is looking for a good start at Wilburton. The Diggers struggled last year in 2A.
The other county teams start the season on Friday night with Heavener at Atoka, Spiro visiting Stilwell, Pocola at Central and Bokoshe hosting Arkoma in a battle of the county’s two eight-man teams.
