Poteau and Wister will square off again Thursday in the winner’s bracket finals of the 2016 baseball LeFlore County Tournament after the two top seeds posted wins on Tuesday.
Poteau outlasted Spiro, 12-10, while Wister posted a 9-1 win over Panama in the winner’s bracket semifinals.
The game will be a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Poteau won over the Wildcats. Wister is the top seed this year while the Pirates are seeded second.
In the Pirates’ win over Spiro, Poteau fell behind 5-2 after the first inning. Poteau grabbed an 8-5 lead after scoring four runs in the third only to see Spiro retake the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Poteau took a 10-9 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth and pushed the lead to 12-9 with a pair of runs in the seventh before Spiro cut the margin with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Mason Grimm was 3-4 with a pair of runs and a RBI, Kale Barcheers went 3-5 with a run and a RBI and a pair of doubles. Gary Price had a 2-4 game with a RBI and Ben Klutts was 1-5 with a double, two RBI and a run.
Trenton Goines was 1-3 with a double, run scored and a RBI and Justace Woolly scored a pair of runs and went 1-3 and added a RBI.
Brynn Hammon got the win for Poteau. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Klutts went 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and striking out four.
Brevon Harper pitched the first 5.0 innings for Spiro with three strikeouts and eight hits. Alex Demato went the other 2.0 innings, allowing four hits.
After being defeated by Panama on Monday, fourth-seeded LeFlore posted a pair of wins to stay alive in the loser’s bracket. The Savages opened with an 8-0 win over Howe before LeFlore downed Whitesboro, 6-4.
Heavener also kept its hopes alive as the Wolves scored four runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Cameron, 9-5 (see STORY).
In loser’s bracket play on Thursday, Heavener plays Spiro at 1 p.m. while LeFlore battles Panama again at 3 p.m. The winners of those two games play at 5 p.m. with Poteau and Wister playing at 7 p.m.
All games will be played at LeFlore.
Also on Tuesday in the early games, Cameron won its first game over Arkoma, 12-2, and Whitesboro defeated Pocola, 3-2.
For Friday, the loser of the Poteau and Wister game plays the winner of Thursday’s 5 p.m. game at 5 p.m. with the championship game set for 7 p.m.
The “if” game is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
