POTEAU—Poteau had an easy time of it Monday in the Pirates baseball opener, blasting Muldrow 24-1 in four innings.
The two teams play again Tuesday at Muldrow, weather permitting. The win was even more important as it was a district contest and will help Poteau in seeding for the postseason.
Poteau jumped ahead 12-0 in the first inning, added four more runs in the second and an additional eight runs in the bottom of the third while banging out 17 hits.
Muldrow scored one run in the top of the fourth before the game ended by run rule. The Bulldogs only managed two hits.
Poteau’s Ben Kliutts was 3-3 with five RBI and four runs including a home run while Kale Barcheers also homered and was 3-4 with four RBI and four runs.
Rece Ward also had a big game for the Pirates, going 3-4 with four RBI and two runs while Carson Cheek was 2-2 with four RBI and Jordan Collins went 2-3.
Ward, Collins and Cheek all had doubles for Poteau.
Bryson Myers threw the first three innings for Poteau, allowing no hits while striking out six. Cheek pitched the final inning, giving up two hits with three strikeouts.
