POTEAU–Spring has sprung and it’s time to gather family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, club members, church members or whoever you can to help participate in Poteau’s 12th annual City Wide Trash Off.
Free food is provided for participants and some camaraderie among teammates, and a little friendly competition for awards makes the work day fun.
This year’s event is April 22 as the date is set in conjunction with the state Trash Off day each year. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. in the parking lot in front of Strike-A-Lot Lanes. Donuts and juice will be available at check-in.
The Community State Bank will be grilling and serving hot-dogs for lunch, beginning about 11:30 a.m. Each participant will receive a ticket for a free hot-dog, chips, and a drink.
Awards will be given after the teams have returned and bags have been tallied. In addition to trophies for Most Business Members, Most Team Members, Most Bags Collected, Most Non-Profit Members, Most School/Organization Members, Most Family Members and Most Church Members the Poteau Chamber of Commerce once again is offering a $100 donation to any non-profit organization, church, school, or non-business group that has the most members participate as an incentive to get more involved.
These are volunteers out picking up trash around affected areas. This does not include residents’ trash pick- up. Residents are encouraged to clean up that day and haul their own out south of town to the transfer station for free dumping during the trash-off event.
There are several ways you can help make this event a success. Organize a team from your business, club, sports team, church, family, or friends. Or just participate as an individual. If you can’t get out-doors to help, pray for good weather and safety for all the participants. While the need to pick up trash is the most pressing, helping with check-in, serving lunch, taking pictures, tallying bags, and providing financial support is needed as well.
If you are interested in making a monetary donation to the event, please contact the Chamber.
Each year, in conjunction with the City Wide Trash Off, the fourth grade students from Poteau School participates in a Poster Contest as part of a litter awareness campaign. The top 10 posters will be placed on Facebook and we are asking the public to help choose our winners. Posters will be picked up and uploaded to Facebook by April 15. You can go to the page at www.facebook.com/poteauchamber and help choose your favorite poster.
Posters are chosen as first, second and third place, “Judges Choice” and “People’s Choice”. The winners receive gift cards from Wal-Mart and certificates from the local McDonalds. The Poster Awards Ceremony will take place at the Upper Elementary School April 20 at 2 p.m. this year. You can also order the 2017 Trash-Off Shirt by calling Poteau Chamber. Deadline for orders are April 12.
To register or volunteer to help, call the Chamber of Commerce office (918-647-9178). Maps are available for volunteers to request to pick up designated areas, but check with the chamber office to make sure those areas are not already assigned or requested.
