WILBURTON—Poteau rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Buffalo Valley, 3-2, in the opening round of the Coal Miners’ Classic on Thursday.
The Pirates (16-6) are back in action Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Wilburton in a game against Oktaha, the top-ranked team in Class 2A.
Poteau led 2-0 before the Buffaloes scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score.
The Pirates answered in the bottom half of the winning, manufacturing the winning run.
Bryson Myers got the win in relief of Kale Barcheers. Myers went 1.0 innings, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Barcheers struck out 11 over the first six innings and gave up three hits.
Jaden Collins was 2-3 with a RBI for the Pirates while Jordan Collins went 2-4 and Dawson Perry doubled while going 1-3 with a run scored.
