POTEAU—Poteau proved that it had the best team in the 4A baseball region it hosted on Thursday and Friday.
The Pirates went 3-0 and capped off the tournament with a 14-2 run-rule win over Stilwell in the championship game Friday afternoon.
Ben Klutts ended the game early with a 3-run shot over the left-field fence to finish the game early. He was also the winning pitcher, going all five innings, allowing only four hits while striking out five.
Stilwell came out hot in the first inning, putting together three hits, but could only score one run.
The Pirates answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six runs to basically put the game away after an inning.
Stilwell scored an unearned run in the third to cut the deficit to 6-2, only to see the Pirates answer with two runs. Poteau piled on three more runs in the fourth inning before adding the final three runs in the fifth on Klutts’ bomb.
With the win, Poteau won a regional championship for the second straight season and qualified for next week’s Class 4A state tournament at Edmond Sante Fe.
Klutts also doubled and was 2-4 with four RBI and three runs, Kale Barcheers doubled while going 2-3 with two RBI and a run, Rece Ward scored three runs and was 1-3, Easton Francis finished 1-2 with two RBI and a run, Jaden Collins scored a pair of runs in a 1-3 outing and Bryson Myers was 1-3 with two RBI.
Poteau improved to 25-9 while Stilwell, which defeated Perkins-Tryon earlier, ends its season at 24-11.
