POTEAU–The path that might occur based on the first day of college is different for everyone, but for Steve and Kim Hughes, they are still together where it all started – Carl Albert State College.
Steve and Kim met at Johnson Hall on the campus of what was then Carl Albert Junior College, and the first day back for the fall 2017 semester marked 30 years since that initial meeting. Steve is a CASC physical science/chemistry instructor and Kim is the Student Support Services Coordinator/Counselor at CASC.
That chance meeting in Zoology class in 1987 led to Steve and Kim making what is now Carl Albert State College their home.
According to Kim, you just never know what might come from meeting a guy in class.
“Thirty years ago, I came to Poteau and did not know anyone,” she said. “Fortunately my roommate, Heather Balentine, was from Poteau. On the first day of class, we went into Johnson Hall for Zoology, and she introduced me to lots of people including Steve Hughes. The instructor, Mr. Smith, was notorious for picking on a student, and this time it just happened to be me. Of course, looking back, I think he was just trying to make me feel welcome, as I am sure I had a deer in the headlights look.”
“Anyway, the next time we went to class, I sat in the very back behind the baseball players, thinking he wouldn’t notice or harass me. Of course, that didn’t work. He just asked the class where I was and Steve pointed me out and said I was hiding behind the baseball players. I thought, who is that guy…I am going to kill him! After that, I moved to the front of the class and harassed Steve and Mr. Smith the rest of the semester.”
Kim shared, “I continued to run into Steve outside of Zoology class. One place was in the bookstore. I worked in the bookstore while I was a student, and for some reason Steve bought a lot of pencils that semester.”
According to Kim, the rest is history. On Aug. 11, Steve and Kim celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary.
“Johnson Hall has many great memories for both of us,” she said. “Steve’s old office was right across the hall from the original Zoology class. I taught in that classroom as well before they remodeled it. Now my office is in Steve’s old Chemistry lab. We love Carl Albert State College and have great memories.”
Kim concluded, “To celebrate our beginning at Carl Albert, I just sent Steve a bouquet of pencils from the CASC bookstore.”
