After finishing with a record-breaking effort in 2016, the LCJ/Ledger picks is back again for 2017, our eighth year of picking high school games involving LeFlore County teams.
Last year, we posted a 66-14 record, which was good even for government work.
Now, we’re back for more. An abbreviated start for this year, the dreaded Week 0 games, with only four games on the schedule for Friday.
Without further blabber, it’s time to pick some games!
HEAVENER AT HASKELL—A tough opener for the Wolfies, making the trip to play the Haymakers, which is actually impossible for people to do. Ground can make hay, people can’t. But we digress. Haskell won last year’s game, 44-7, and returns most of its skill players. Heavener is a much different team, though, and we expect a closer contest this year. HASKELL 28, HEAVENER 14.
WARNER AT PANAMA—The Pigs won last year’s matchup, 45-18, and Warner’s coach Brandon Ellis is now an assistant at Gore. Plenty of questions about Panama, but it probably won’t matter this week. PANAMA 35, WARNER 7.
TALIHINA AT ATOKA—Talihina is expected to be loaded for this year, but the Golden Tigers are banged up. Talihina spiked the Wampus Cats, 49-32, last year. Expect a repeat this year, with a bigger margin of victory. TALIHINA 35, ATOKA 12.
ARKOMA AT SOUTHWEST COVENANT—Arkoma is coming off a 10-2 season and returns many of its players, expect for the quarterback. Southwest Covenant was 6-4 in 2016. The two teams did not play last year. Look for a lot of points, since it is an eight-man game. ARKOMA 48, SOUTHWEST COVENANT 42.
