POTEAU–Poteau is a very unique, synergistic, city that stays creative in ways to keep living up to the name above the ordinary given not only for being the Home of Cavanal, “The World’s Highest Hill” but a progressive city and fantastic events like The Cavanal Killer 8k and The Award Winning Poteau Balloon Fest.
With these two existing events being a huge success, Karen Wages and The Poteau Chamber Staff decided it was time to add another unique event to the list. Thus began in January the plans for the 1st Half Marathon down the Old Frisco Railroad Track that is now the Frisco Trail.
The trail is being maintained with the help of the County and a team put together by Josh Snyder and those that use the trail.
The trail is a popular route each morning and evening for local runners, walkers and cyclist. The serene trail surroundings have become a popular local place to exercise canine friends.
The Old Frisco Trail Half Marathon will provide a race atmosphere that will bring participants from several states. The race date of Sept. 30 was selected in coordination with the Downtown Wheels and Deals Car Show scheduled for the entire weekend.
The race will also bring awareness to the connection to the downtown area for residents and visitors to park and take a walk, run or cycle through the trail that leads to Wister. Race Chairman John Ford and Josh Snyder are working on the course and maps will be available at the Chamber office and online.
“This is a special event for me,” said Karen Wages, CEO of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. “Growing up in Wister, I crossed the Frisco Train tracks and now my office sets where the tracks ran through Poteau. Looking out my office window I can look directly down the trail that leads to Carl Albert State College. We are excited to bring this race to everyone locally, regionally and across the United States.”
This race will take Poteau to the next level with the partnership of a national race group, Race Entry. Race Entry will help connect Poteau’s event to those that have registered for similar events across the United States.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. at The Donald W. Reynolds Center and move down McKenna to Carl Albert State College to Scholars Road then to Hwy. 59 to Hwy. 270 through the PARC and The Old Frisco Trail.
