Four LeFlore County football teams won their district openers Friday, including Bokoshe which snapped a 24-game losing streak with a 16-14 win over Bowlegs.
In 4A-4, Poteau opened district play with a 41-35 win at Metro Christian while Panama stayed undefeated with a 20-7 win over Hartshorne in 2A-6 play.
Talihina won its A-8 opener at LeFlore County foe Pocola, 44-6. Bokoshe’s win came in the opening game of B-8 play and was the Tigers’ first victory since a 28-0 conquest of Paoli on Oct. 24, 2014.
Bokoshe improves to 1-3 and visits Coyle next week. l
In other games Friday, Vian snapped a rare two-game losing streak with a 31-0 win over Heavener (see STORY), Canadian won at Arkoma, 44-30, and Eufaula got a victory at Spiro, 34-12.
Poteau (4-0, 1-0) got three touchdown runs and a touchdown pass from Easton Francis as the Pirates held on for the win in Tulsa. Jett Pitchford threw a touchdown pass to Jameson Shackelford while Gunnar Thompson caught the TD pass from Francis to clinch the win.
Nathan Ulmer also scored on a 6-yard touchdown run and Race Williams intercepted two passes. Metro drops to 1-3 and 0-1. Poteau has another tough road game next week at Fort Gibson, which knocked off Stilwell, 63-6, on Friday.
Sooner Box threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as Talihina improved to 4-1 and 1-0 with the win at Pocola. Kariim Byrd caught a pair of touchdown passes, Heath Humphreys and Gus Griffith also scores after receptions from Box. Griffith scored the Golden Tigers’ final touchdown on a pass from Ryker Baughman.
Eric Carlton scored on a 70-yard run for Pocola’s only touchdown. Talihina visits Quinton next week while Pocola (1-3, 0-1) hosts Gore.
Panama stayed perfect with a 20-7 win at home over Hartshorne. The Razorbacks improve to 5-0 and 1-0 while Hartshorne drops to 1-4 and 0-1. Panama hosts Valliant next week in another district game.
Eufaula coasted to a 34-12 win at Spiro in the final non-district game for both teams. The Ironheads (3-2) host Heavener (0-5) in both teams’ district opener next week while the Bulldogs (0-4) have a home game with Wilburton.
Arkoma lost at home to Canadian, 44-30. The Mustangs fall to 3-2 while Canadian improves to 3-1. Arkoma has a bye next week before opening district play the following week.
