POTEAU—Pocola had to rally three times against Heavener before the second-seeded Lady Indians captured the 2017 fast-pitch softball LeFlore County Tournament Thursday night.
Two of the rallies came late in the 5-4 win the championship game, capped off by a double from Kenzie Tuck to bring in the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh after Heavener scored two runs in the top half of the inning to take the lead.
Pocola also rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 2-0 after Heavener scored two runs in the top of the fifth, the Lady Indians scored three times to take their first lead of the game.
Nena Chitwood was the winning pitcher for Pocola in relief of Shakyrah Gladness. Chitwood threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Gladness, who was named the tournament MVP, pitched the first 4.2 innings, giving up three hits with four strikeouts.
Tuck was 3-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run while Morgan Francis drove in two runs while going 1-3 with a run.
Sydney Crase doubled and tripled for Heavener and was 2-4 with two RBI and Shelby Smith doubled while going 1-4 with a RBI.
Makenzie Wilson took the loss, going the distance and allowing five hits while walking four.
In the winner’s bracket finals, Heavener was cruising along with a 2-0 lead before Pocola scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to get the win and advance to the championship game.
Gladness was the winning pitcher for Pocola. She went 5.0 innings, striking out four and giving up three hits. Emma Demato was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI, Chloe Demato went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI, Amanda Ryan finished 2-3 with a run and Francis was 2-3 with a run and a RBI.
Wilson was tagged with the loss as she gave up 11 hits and struck out three. The Lady Wolves had four errors in both games against Pocola.
Heavener bounced back from the first loss to Pocola to defeat Howe, 6-0, as Wilson threw a one-hitter and struck out five.
Emily Yandell was 1-2 with two runs and a RBI, Crase was 1-2 with two RBI and a run and Kyle Free finished 1-1 with two runs.
Zoe Nation had Howe’s only hit.
Earlier, Howe stayed alive with a 3-0 win over Wister.
