Bible games and psychograph

By LEON YOUNGBLOOD

I was happily surprised to find a copy of Aggregate Goatsby’s Bible Game & Psychograph in a 30-year-old pile of books and papers in my garage.  Here is the document in its entirety:

In each set, put an ‘X’ by the real Bible verses, and an “O” by the ones you practice.

___ After you’re saved you can sin with impunity.  Free grace is a free ride!  (Romans 6:1-2}

What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  By no means!  How can we who died to sin still live in it?  (Romans 6:1-2)

___ Jesus Wept.  (John 11:35)

___ If you are really a Christian, you’ll always be happy.  (John 11:35)

BRIAR CIRCLE

___ People should recognize you for your abilities and achievements. They should devote their attention to you constantly because of your good works, and have church fellowships in your honor.  Therefore, demand what is your due, even if you have to be an overbearing mule about it.  (Luke 17:7-10)

___ Will any of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit at table’?  Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’?  Does he thank the servant because he did what he was commanded?  So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty,’ (Luke 17:7-10)________________________________________________

___ Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do . . . that they may be praised by men . . .  But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  (Matthew 6:2-4)

___ And when you give alms, do so ostentatiously: for others need to see how holy you are to learn from your example.  (Matthew 6:2-4) ___________________________________________

___ But the Lord said to Samuel, “When you seek teachers and leaders, remember that appearance and personality are everything!  These are the characteristics of the God-called man.  (1 Samuel 16:7)

___ But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”  (1 Samuel 16:7) __________________________

__  When you are dissatisfied with someone, tell your church, your neighbors and your town, that this silly person be exposed; and your talk will liven up the church services, and thus all men will be drawn to the house of God.  (James 1:26)

___  If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is in vain.  (James 1:26) ______________________________________________

___ If you are indeed a child of God, your Father will give you anything you desire; if you are righteous, you will have the best house, the best clothes, and all material wealth, for you are a child of the King!  (Matthew 8:20)

___ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”  (Matthew 8:20) ____________________________________

___  And Jesus taught them, saying, “Tend you to another’s faults!  Inform him of his failings, criticize him, instruct him from your vast store of experience!  For you know you know everything, and this fool ought to know you know, too, and do all you tell him, for he is such a hopeless reprobate!”  (Matthew 7:1-5)

___ “Judge not that you be not judged.  For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.  Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?  Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.   (Matthew 7:1-5) __________________________________________

Now, look up the passages in the Bible to see which ones you got right to determine your SCORE:

0 correct:  As Acts 4:13 puts it, you are “unlearned and ignorant.”

1 – 2 correct:  As Paul wrote to Timothy, “Study to show thyself approved.”

3 – 6 correct:  Fair.  As Revelation 3:15 would phrase it, “thou art neither cold nor hot.”

7 correct:   As Peter advised, “Beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing.”

8 correct:  Pretty good.  But remember, as Luke 12:48 says, “to whom much is given, much will be required.”

9 or more correct:  Like in Mark 7:37, “they were beyond measure”—for there are only 8 sets in this fairly good Bible Game and Psychograph.

If I find anything else by Reverend Goatsby, I might run it in a future Briar Circle.  As an incidental, he was fired from his ministerial position by an offended congregation a week or so after running this in the church newsletter.  (Some churches are like that, you know.)
