Big.
This is the best way to describe several of the football games in Week 9 Friday night with three Oklahoma games in particular.
Poteau (8-0 and 5-0) hosts perennial power Ada (8-0, 5-0) to likely decide the district champion of 4A-4 although the Pirates visit Stilwell next week while rhe Cougars host Broken Bow.
For Heavener (5-3 and 3-2) and Spiro (5-3, 3-2), the winner of Friday’s game takes over third place in District 2A-6. The Wolves finish at Antlers next week while Spiro has a much easier end to the regular season with a game with Wilburton.
The Wolves have already won more games since any season 2015, when they were 5-5 and the last time Heavener defeated Spiro. A win would give them six wins in a season for the first time since Heavener was 9-3 and district champions in 2004.
Most of the scores through the season between the two teams have been fairly similar aside from Heavener defeating Pocola, 34-33 in the opener while the Bulldogs lost the following week to Pocola, 50-6.
It will be senior night for Heavener and the last home game from a large group of seniors who have progressed every year.
District standings after Week 8
Another big game has Panama (5-3 and 3-1) visiting an undefeated Central Sallisaw team. If the Razorbacks win, they could win the district championship by defeating the Tigers and winning next week’s game at Haskell due to head-to-head results.
Gore has two district losses and Pocola has three. Even with a loss, Panama would still be second in the playoff seedings because of last week’s win over Gore.
Pocola (5-3 and 3-2) will likely continue feasting on the easier part of its schedule when the Indians host Porter (3-5 and 2-3).
Since Canadian forfeited Thursday night’s game with Talihina, the final game involving a LeFlore County team has Arkoma (2-6 and 1-2) hosting district leading Keota (4-4 and 3-0).
Other area games in Oklahoma has Fort Gibson at Sallisaw; Stilwell at Broken Bow; Idabel at Wilburton; Antlers at Valliant; Haskell at Gore; Gans at Foyil; Vian at Prague; Muldrow at Lincoln Christian; Stigler at Berryhill; and Hartshorne at Allen.
The schedule for area Arkansas teams has Greenwood at Pulaski Academy; Van Buren at Mountain Home; Cabot at Northside; Bentonville West at Southside; Cedarville at Mansfield; Hackett at Greenland; and Waldron at Mena.
