Boys’ semifinals set for Friday

The boys’ semifinals of the 2023 basketball LeFlore County Tournament will be held Friday starting at 7 p.m. in Spiro.

Top-seeded Pocola plays fourth-seeded Spiro in the opener before second-seeded Heavener and third-seeded Wister pair off at 8:30 p.m.

Winners advance to Saturday’s championship game 8:30 p.m. in Spiro.

Also Friday, in the fifth-place game Poteau and Panama play at 4 p.m. while in the consolation championship, LeFlore and Arkoma play at 4 p.m., also in Spiro.

The girls’ championship game Saturday will pit LeFlore against second-seeded Howe at 7 p.m.

The Lady Savages scored the biggest upset in recent memory with a 49-45 win over defending champion and top-seeded Pocola in the opener.

After trailing 23-17 at the half, LeFlore outscored Pocola 32-22 in the second half to grab the win. The Lady Savages won the game at the free-throw line, making 13-17 while Pocola went 6-10.

In Friday’s second semifinal, Howe’s girls, seeded second, got off to their traditional fast start and made it hold up in a 51-40 victory over third-seeded Whitesboro.

Howe’s girls jumped ahead 20-4 and led 24-12 at the break before extending the advantage to 44-20 after three quarters to reach another finals.

In the earlier games, Spiro downed Panama, 44-35, in the fifth-place game and Poteau overwhelmed Wister, 50-29, for the consolation championship.
