Calera edges Wister for state bid

WISTER – Calera came out of the losers bracket to defeat Wister twice, including 3-1 Monday, to win the regional tournament and advance to the Class 2A state tournament later this week.

Wister defeated Calera, 10-0, in the second round Friday before losing by a run Saturday and then suffering the loss Monday.

Fourth-ranked Wister ends its season at 25-6. Calera is 16-10 going into the state tournament.

After Calera scored a run in the top of the first, Wister answered with a run in the third, but was held scoreless the remainder of the game, while Calera scored the winning runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Dartyn Meeks started for the Wildcats and went five innings, giving up six hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and four walks. Landon Thornburg went two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.

Wister only managed two hits in the contest, both by Riley Crane, who went 2-4.
