District showdowns set for Thursday

All the LeFlore County football teams are set for district games Thursday night as this is fall break and games are a day early.

Heavener has what is probably the biggest game of the week as the Wolves return home to Harvey Stadium for only the third time this year as they host fifth-ranked Kingston. Heavener is 4-2 overall, 2-1 in district play and has won two straight district games over Prague and Roland. Kingston is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play.

The Redskins are ranked fifth in Class 2A this week and are the only team still undefeated in district play along with Hugo, which handed Heavener its only district loss in both teams’ district opener at Hugo.

This is not the same Heavener team which lost to Hugo earlier in the season. The Wolves were strictly a running team at that point, but have become much more balanced since Zaid Rodriguez was inserted at quarterback. His play has improved each week and his passing ability will keep the Redskins from loading the box on defense, thus making it easier for Heavener to run the ball as Carson Payne edges closer to 1,000 yards on the season and has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game this season aside from one.

Kingston’s offense also appears to be on a roll after defeating Bethel, 71-20, last week. If Heavener can defeat Kingston and win out, and the Redskins defeat Hugo later in the year, there could be a three-way tie for the district championship and would come down to district points.

In other games Thursday, Tulsa McLain (2-3 and 1-2) visits Poteau (4-2 and 2-1); Spiro (1-4 and 1-2) will look for its second straight district win at Morris (0-6 and 0-3); Panama tries to rebound from last week’s district loss to Rejoice Christian when the Razorbacks (4-2 and 2-1) visit Warner (4-2 and 1-2) in a game important for both teams as they try to qualify for postseason play; Pocola (4-2 and 2-1) is at Chouteau-Mazie (0-6 and 0-3); Talihina (6-0 and 3-0) try to stay perfect at Liberty (4-2 and 2-1) and Arkoma (4-1 and 1-0) hosts Wilson (Henryetta) (4-1 and 1-0).
