10 YEARS AGO

2015—Marvin’s IGA to build new store on the edge of Heavener next to Memorial Cemetery….Heavener City Council discusses changes to Heavener city charter…Lily Friedl selected basketball homecoming queen. The king was Noah Davis…Marion Fry sworn in as associate judge…H. Wayne Smith honored with 30-year pin…Choctaw Nation announces plans to bring Chili’s to Poteau.

50 YEARS AGO

1975—Three men who escaped from the LeFlore County jail are back in custody…122 students enrolled in the vo-tech center south of Heavener…Forest ranger Bob Laval said Cedar Lake will be drained, then refilled with bass, catfish and crapped. The lake is being drained due to overpopulation…Work orders are expected for bridges between Heavener and Poteau…A replica of the original smoke house at the Peter Conser home is being rebuilt…Hub Café will now be open Sundays…Charles Bronson stars in “Mr. Majestic” at the Liberty this week.

60 YEARS AGO

1965—L.E. McBride to retire after 22 years with Forest Service…Three Heavener men are being held in conjunction with a robbery of their relative near LeFlore…C.C. Peden has a 1952 tractor for sale…”Outlaw Territory” is showing this week at the Liberty Theater.

80 YEARS AGO

1945—J.A. Akin has sold the Heavener Bakery to Curtis Norvell, who has worked there 12 years…Carl A. King of Heavener was part of a crew that repaired a bridge that had been bombed in Belgium. The crew fixed the bridge and had traffic flowing in less than 24 hours…Large coal operation to start soon in Coaldale…Roy Rogers stars in “Lights of Old Sante Fe” this week at the Ledger.

90 YEARS AGO

1935—The Check Inn, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shupert is moving to a new location…Winter arrived here Sunday when cold rain and temperatures turned to sleet and temperatures dropped to 5 degrees…Mrs. G.D. Hughes sold her millinery shop in Heavener to Mrs. Goldie Ward.

100 YEARS AGO

1925—5-year-old boy hit by train near Zoe. Train crew took the boy to his home and called a doctor. He was taken to a hospital in Fort Smith and is expected to live…Grover Flanagan of Heavener has been selected county judge…Luther Johnson has nine mules, one horse and three trailers for sale.
