50 YEARS AGO

1974—Oklahoma Game and Fish Commission releasing 50,000 channel catfish into Wister Lake. Another 50,000 were released earlier in the year…Cedar Lake will receive 4,000 fingerling channel catfish this month…Cleo Ritter returning to Heavener to take post as local representative for OG&E…Heavener Police Department issues 21 citations in October, which brought in $344 in fines…Mr. and Mrs. Tal V. Morris celebrate 60th anniversary. 1964—Heavener’s new water plant to be dedicated Nov. 29. Congressman Carl Albert will be the speaker at the event…The delayed work on the delayed Talimena Drive begins. The first 6.3 miles is now being constructed…Santa Claus plans visit to Heavener Dec. 4. Heavener Lions Club has scheduled the parade, which features Santa…Kenneth Capps reports Heavener received 5.67 inches of rain this week…Fannie’s Gift Shop in Heavener is going out of business…Daily home delivery of milk is just 18 cents per quart…Regular gas is 27.9 cents per gallon at the Deep Rock Station in Heavener…Dale Franklin has a 1960 Ford Station wagon for sale for $595.

1954—Heavener City Manager Mac Sims resigns. He will be replaced by Gordon Bryan…Some 16 windows at the high school were broken out last week by a BB gun and rocks. A second grade youth was apprehended for causing the damage…James Simmons has opened the former Reese Sinclar Station East First Street south of the post office…Curtis A. Norvell has a 285-gallon butane tank for sale…Heavener Bakery makes fresh donuts every day.

1944—Air in area turns crisp this week…Extra express trains have been added to passenger trains to carry added mail and express loans…Mayor A.W. “Dub” Salter is home after serving in new Guinea. He is in the Army Air Corp…Blackwell & Hall Service Station can recap your worn tires for $7 each.

90 YEARS AGO

1934—Contract is expected this month for the proposed bridge over the Arkansas River north of Spiro. The bridge will provide a direct route from Sallisaw to our area…Everything is ready for the big annual football game between the Heavener Mountain Wolves and Poteau Thanksgiving day…Heavener Airport has received a grant for an additional $2,000 for buildings…Eight red fox imported from Illinois have been released near Whitesboro in the Kiamichi Valley. The fox are full grown…Addison’s 5c & 10c store in Heavener is having its 10th birthday sale…Tom Brand of Heavener has a wagon and a set of harness for sale.
