Heavener and Poteau split

Heavener and Poteau split a pair of basketball games at Heavener Monday night between the two old LeFlore County rivals.

Poteau’s girls won the opener, 44-33, before the Wolves overcame slow starts in the first and third quarter to outscore the Pirates, 40-24.

Both Heavener teams are home Tuesday against Talihina. Poteau hosts Checotah in NOAA action Friday.

Girls

Poteau’s girls, now 1-5, captured their first win of the season as Brooklyn Garner tallied 24 of the Lady Pirates’ points and Poteau outscored the Lady Wolves by eight points in the second half to seal the win.

Ava Cartwright and Brooklyn May both scored 11 points to lead the Lady Wolves, now 3-7.

Boys

Despite the slow starts, Heavener got hot in the second quarter and got a basket from Isaac Cook from midcourt to end the third period to down the Pirates.

Heavener, which is 9-1 and broke into the Class 3A rankings this week at 19, failed to get the usual shots to fall against the Pirates, who also struggled shooting, especially down low where Heavener’s Landon Thurman blocked and altered numerous shots.

Thurman, who had scored 31 in Heavener’s previous two games, led the Wolves with 17 points.

Heavener is 9-1. Poteau is 2-6.
