Heavener corrals Rangers

By CRAIG HALL

Heavener Coach Jeff Broyles was a little worried before the Wolves’ football game at Roland Friday night, a team Heavener had not defeated since 2013 in a 20-13 overtime win.

His worries were unfounded.

The Wolves put together their best offensive output of the season to run away from Roland in a 48-21 win as Zaid Rodriguez had his best game passing with two scoring throws and also broke through late for a touchdown run, Carson Payne scored three times and Fernando Villanueva was perfect on PAT’s and hit two field goals in the Wolves’ romp.

The biggest trouble Heavener has was the bus carrying the football team acting up and the heavy traffic in Fort Smith that made getting back into Oklahoma a trial after making the short cut through Arkansas.

The game was even a little more lopsided than the final outcome as Roland scored two touchdowns late against Heavener’s reserves.

Heavener improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in district play. Roland is 1-5 and 1-2 in a rebuilding season for the young Rangers.

The Wolves return home Friday to host fifth-ranked Kingston in another big district contest against one of the district favorites.
