Heavener rallies past Battiest, 6-5

By CRAIG HALL

It was not the best time for Heavener’s fast pitch softball team Tuesday afternoon.

Heading into the Lady Wolves’ last at-bat in the seventh inning, Heavener’s offense had been non-existent and trailed Battiest 5-1 with one runner on base and two outs.

The Lady Wolves had Haylee Morrison on base after singling when the second out was recorded. That is when Heavener’s bats really came alive. Brittley Reed walked before Kristy Shadwick singled to left field, bringing in Haylee. Morrison to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Meredith Smith singled to left to bring in Reed and Heavener, trailed 5-3. Kaitlin Hurst was hit by a pitch to load the bases, bringing up JaLyn Hash, who doubled to bring in the tying in pinch runner Kiera Doyle, who was running for Meredith Smtih, and winning run in Hurst and to cap off the unlikely rally.

Reed picked up the win for Heavener, going all seven innings on this warm, August afternoon. She allowed seven hits and the five runs, four earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Meredith Smith led Heavener’s offense, going 3-4 with a RBI, Shadwick finished 2-3 with a RBI and a run and Hash had the game-winning double as Heavener improved to 5-6 going into Thursday’s home three-way with Spiro and Talihina.
