The date was Sept. 19, 2003. Heavener had started 2-0 and visited Panama for its final non-district game in football.

The Wolves had one of those nights and defeated the Razorbacks, 56-19, to improve to 3-0. The following week, Heavener opened district play with a 6-0 loss to Spiro. The Wolves finished 9-1 overall, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Chouteau.

Friday night, Heavener will attempt to duplicate that start from 21 years ago as the Wolves travel across the state line to visit Charleston, Arkansas, in the final non-district game for Heavener before district play starts Sept. 28 at Hugo.

Charleston is a traditional power and won a state championship two years ago. The Tigers are 0-2 to start the season with the two losses coming in a combined four points.

It will be a matchup of different styles as Charleston likes to throw the football and Heavener prefers to pound and grind, rushing for over 400 yards in last week’s 26-16 win over Panama.
