Kingston takes district lead with win

Kington takes district lead in District 2A-3 by using big plays to defeat Heavener 52-14, Thursday while Kiefer handed Hugo a 30-28 loss for the Buffaloes’ first district loss.

Kingston, now 6-1 overall and 4-0, in the district, scored on a long run on the Redskins’ first offensive play and returned two interceptions for touchdowns in defeating Heavener in the first meeting between the two schools.

Kingston hosts Prague next week. Heavener, now 4-3 and 2-2, hosts Okmulgee in homecoming next week.

The Wolves are still in contention for a playoff spot, but miss win two of the last three games to at least finish fourth. If Heavener wins out, the Wolves could finish as high as third.

Poteau captured its second straight win heading into a difficult closing schedule in district play. The Pirates, now 5-2 and 3-1, crushed Tulsa McLain (2-4 and 1-3) going into Poteau’s difficult closing stretch which begins with a game at Sallisaw next week before a home game with Hilldale before closing out the regular season at Broken Bow.

Broken Bow is still undefeated while Poteau, Ada, Sallisaw and Hilldale all have one district loss.

Spiro slammed Morris, 47-0, Thursday, the Bulldogs’ second straight win. Spiro improves to 2-5 and 2-2 and hosts Atoka next week. Morris is winless. Spiro and Atoka are tied for fourth place in district play after the Wampus Cats lost 49-0 to Valliant Thursday.

Spiro closes with games at Henryetta and Antlers.

Pocola moved closer to clinching a playoff spot and kept Chouteau winless with a 62-36 win Thursday. The Indians are 5-2 overall, 3-1 in district play, tied for second place in the district with Hartshorne, which suffered its first loss Thursday. The Indians host Hartshorne next week in Pocola’s homecoming game.

Panama suffered a disappointing 23-20 loss to Warner to drop to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in district play. Warner is 5-2 and 2-2. Panama visits Haskell this week before closing with Pocola and Hartshorne.

Arkoma suffered its first district setback as the Mustangs lost to Wilson (Henryetta), 50-0 Thursday. The Mustangs are 4-2 and 1-1. Wilson is 5-1 and 2-0. Arkoma visits Wesleyan next week.

Unlike the other county schools, Talihina is following the traditional Friday night schedule as the Golden Tigers visit Liberty Friday night. Talihina is 6-0 and 3-0. Liberty is 4-2 and 2-1.
